The legendary Matterhorn
The Matterhorn is one of the highest mountains of the Alps at 4,478 metres above sea level and certainly one of the most photographed mountains in the world. The Matterhorn can be reached from Switzerland and Italy.
In 1865, the Englishman Edward Whymper and 6 other alpinists succeeded in the first ever ascent of the Matterhorn. They reached the summit faster than an Italian team trying the ascent at the same time.
On the descent, the tragedy happened: 4 of the mountaineers had a fatal accident. Ever since then, the Matterhorn has been world famous. The Swiss mountain village Zermatt quickly advanced to a tourist hotspot in the centre of the Alps.
